How did we get here?

Patronage is the oldest form of arts funding, but it was lost over the past hundred years as the music industry developed. But the truth is, musicians make music for people to hear, and people listen to music that moves them. Nowadays, anything other than those two elements is a distraction at best, and an obstruction at worst - marketing, focus groups, contests and even storage media (eg. CDs, thumb drives, etc).
