What is a House Concert?

A house concert is really exactly what the name implies.  It is a concert that you host in your home.  It could be an inside or outside event, but it is always by invitation and mostly for your friends, family and neighbors.  House concerts provide an intimate performance by Nationally Touring Acts, as well as personal contact with the artists during and after the event. Typically a House Concert consists of two forty-five minute performances with a break of about a half hour in between so the artist(s) can interract with your guests and sell CDs and merchandise.

How many people should I expect?

To start with you will probably want to consider a "Dinner and a Song" or "Dessert and a Song" type of an event, which is a mid-week event for 10-20 close friends.  You can serve either a full dinner or dessert and have a shorter performance than a typical house concert (typically a 45 minute set).  Then your friends provide donations to the artist, and purchase their CDs and other merchandise.

Once you've had some success getting people to your event, you might then try a true House Concert.  These are typically held on a Friday or Saturday and you should market the event with the intent to get 30 or more guests to attend.  Again, they provide donations for the performers and will hopefully purchase their CDs and merchandise.

How can I learn more about becoming a House Concert host?

There is a wonderful resource out there for folks who wish to put on house concerts called Concerts In Your Home (http://www.concertsinyourhome.com) .

They have many wonderful resources that will help you to host a successful house concert. The best part is that your Host membership is absolutely free.

Does it cost Money to Host a House Concert?

There are some costs involved, but most Hosts are happy to expend a little to get back the rewards of a well presented House Concert.  All of the donations typically go to the Artist, and many Hosts have a Pot-Luck styled meal.  You would just need to provide a suitable place in your home or yard, along with enough seating for the event.
